Software, some new, some improved

Right, so there's some new power behind soapbox.co.nz that nobody will notice unless I point it out, because that's how smoothly it's all gone.

Firstly, MovableType 3.2. This upgrade actually involved an upgrade script, so after a database backup & a file backup I hit the magic unicorn and it happened. Surprisingly easy. The icons have become more colourful, (were there icons before? what did they look like? I can't remember), the interface has a couple of inverse s curves, that make it look slightly swisher. Other than that there's new stuff under the hood that they explain better. See the release announcement.

Secondly, Mint. I first ran into it on halfpie, who apparently read about it all over the place (wow, was I out of the loop or what... I hadn't heard about it until then). It's taken me five days to build up the "it looks kind of cool, but should I really part with cash". Somehow I did. Wow. I've got full access to my Apache logs, so there's not much extra it can tell me, but who wants to parse Apache logs? Not me. Still. Wow. It's nice looking and shows me nice and simply something I hadn't realised. My movies section attracts lots of google attention. Another oddity. Using the xtramsn.co.nz search thingy for "movies", brings up my movies site. First. Don't believe me? I have screenshot evidence.

So. Let's see if anybody follows these links to halfpie, and if any come back my way :)

Do I count? Now you'll see my home IP address too (with XXX Strong Mint), which is no bad thing if you want to know who is reading what on your site.

Nice change about too. How'd you get the Flickr photos to go transparent?

I've always had my apache logs, and sometimes I'll get bored and run host {ip-address}, and then have a think about who it might be. Of course MT shows me your IP address.

People knowing who I am often isn't hard... I show up as coming from thewall.pftqg.com :)

The transparent flickr photos... now that's a trade secret, born from hours and hours of hacking in- oh, who am I kidding. It's a "cheap" css trick. To find out how I did it, have a look at http://is.patrick.geek.nz/soapbox/3.0/styles4.css, do a search for #flickr and see the classes. Opacity gets (almost) all browsers except IE, and the fliter gets the last browser.
