Reading Syndication

When faced with the first day when I had absolutely nowhere to be for over 24 hours in over 3 months, I had planned to tidy and organise. Guess how much of that happened. (I'll give you a hint: none.)

I have downloaded PulpFiction Lite, with the intention of giving it a go. I discovered that when you then import your .opml file full of subscriptions, and then grab all of them at once, thus ending up with 1000 unread entries, it goes slow when doing anything involving the database. I'm not sure what this says about how it will perform after having it around for a month or two.

So far the one feature I miss from NetNewsWire Lite is the "grouping" it did (I had three - People, News, Tech Things), which I believe PulpFiction Lite can't do, but the "not so light" PulpFiction can using filters. This may be an incentive to pay for it, depending on whether or not I get used to it's different way of "working". I do like the idea of being able to treat entries like Mail, moving them around and flagging them (for when I read them at work and need to read more later).

RSS feed guzzlers:

While having a quick look through my logs I can see that LiveJournal behaves nicely with RSS feeds (only getting the whole feed when it updates), whereas BlogLines gets the whole feed. Every hour. However apparently there are 4 people grabbing the decade feed through BlogLines. Most client software seems well behaved.

In other news:

Whakamana (powering testing) now supports .text (MarkDown pages), and .xml (but only for xml-newstyle) pages. It also supports "folder wide" menus, rather dynamically read from a text file. I'm not sure if there is a way (other than using memcache?) of speeding it up. Any kind of "dump to php encoded something" is going to probably end up being just as costly. Maybe the answer really is to cache final output...
