It just happens to be the first line in the third paragraph of Chapter One :) (Two sentences later, "A Modern Neanderthal from a parallel version of Earth had somehow slipped into this universe."

If you're into sci-fi, I highly recommend reading something by Sawyer (and he's Canadian!).
