Manage the galleries

A little while ago I started work on a tool that would create the medium size view for my photos.patrick site. I did this because I saw a command line tool (ImageMagick) used by another gallery creating thing, and thought, "I want that!", so I did.

Now, not to be one to do things by quarters, I thought it would be an idea to have thumbnail indexes instead of my current text indexes (James mentioned something along the lines of that may be a good idea at some stage). A small refactoring of the xml file (to add an additional "thumbnail" tag), and that was done.

Having done that, I decided I was sick of those ()'s in the URLs. So with a quick modrewrite rule they are gone, and the "index" xml file is now stored in the directory with the images, instead of in the parent folder. (As it happens the modrewrite rule translates the new URL's into the old /(n)/ style, but that's just because it's easier.)

So I then had a tool that nicely made the different size images, and for the first time a tool that made a skeleton gallery .xml file. However, until now, the only way to edit was to then open the .xml file using a text editor (such as the excellent SubEthaEdit). Today that has changed! There is now the beginnings of an editing tool. Ok, so right now it just gives you a text field so you can edit the XML. Ok, so it's slightly easier than editing the file using a real text editor. The idea is that soon there will be a 'wizard' that will make editing that file a whole lot easier for me.

Heck, at least it kind of works!
