Quiet Period

There is a party going on somewhere to the right of my flat, so my room is being blasted

with bass. It doesn't overly worry me, as it's never happened before. Maybe it will finish before I want to sleep. You

never know, it might happen.

I had work tonight, wow it was long. And again tomorrow night. It just saps the

energy out, leaving little for creative thought to go into the blog/journal entries.

I was thinking just now,

as I downloaded a new nightly for FireBird, why I don't use it, and why I use Safari. And then I was thinking about how

Hyatt describes (quite aptly) the old bug

guilt trips. So here's my, "I can't work under these conditions. I'll be in my trailor" post.

/>

  • Safari is fast. It's fast on my G3 800. It's fast when I'm on battery and working at 400MHz. FireBird is reasonable on power, sluggish on battery.
  • The properties window in FB still shows up as a sheet when they are any browser windows active. I don't understand why. With the latest build (as at 2003/11/15 1:20am NZDT), the created sheet takes up full screen and goes over a bit. With no windows open, the prefs window opens as it should, and is a nice normal size.
  • The about window in FB also shows up as a sheet.
  • The customize toolbar popup, however, is not. It's another fully fledged window. It should, I guess, at least be a floater (with a thin title bar).
  • FB's menus became almost and completely unusable when I accidentally closed all windows except a download window, but I haven't verified this behavior in the latest nightly.
  • FB doesn't use native widgets. The prefs window uses elements that look almost Aqua, but the browser itself doesn't. It's reminiscent of using IE in a way.

FB is still quite good, and I like it's tabs UI-element in the latests builds.

It just looks really really nice. It's not aqua-panther tabs, but it's not a poor replication of aqua-pre-panther tabs

either. I'd post a screenshot of what I mean, but it's not loaded at the moment. If Safari didn't exist, undoubtedly

I'd use FB. But it does.

Ok, almost all of my gripes are UI. But lets face it - the UI is what I see, and

it's what I interact with. However, I see constant improvement from FB, so I shall continue to update, and watch for

goodness, and maybe one day it shall succeed Safari as my default browser. You never know.
