My adventures for today

I bought a second PCI NIC yesterday (Being only NZD$16), mainly because it was cheap but also because somehow the cable modem has just stopped routing recently. Over the USB->Ethernet dongle I had I would have to unplug the usb side and recconect and routing would resume... I'm not sure if cable hates me, or wether it was my dongle - though I never had problems like that before, but it could be the latest drivers. I should try and find my slightly older ones.

But I installed it this evening, and have been having problems with the fan in the PSU ever since - it's been going really really loudly, but bashing the side of the case a few times quietens it again. It's gone for an hour now, so I'm hoping it'll behave when I sleep tomorrow.

But the harddrive in my iBook has died. Like dead. Doesn't even show up as drive to install to if I throw the OSX install disc in. It's been making weird noises and sounding like it's stuck a couple of times recently - it'd do it for about 10-15 mins, and would go across a reboot, including turning it off completely. I'm hoping if I take it in first thing monday I can guilt them into fixing it quickly. Incidentally the unhappy mac icon isn't their anymore either... now it's a folder that flashes between a ? and the finder icon. I'm just glad this didn't happen yesterday morning, I'd have been screwed. Like completely and totally. Usually I keep my assignments on at least 2 harddrives, but I hadn't as I finished work and put it to sleep.

I've never had a hard drive fail on me. This laptop (arnold) has been dropped more times than I care to remember (I was picking it up from it's little cage and it dropped - unfortunately on to the wireless card, which is now pointing about 10-15degrees upwards when it used to lie flat (the aerial part), but it still works, so I'm not complaining. But it's harddrive has never shown inclinations of pain. And it's nearly 2 years old (in just over a month).
