I have decided LifTP ain't so bad after all. Despite flauting the Apple HIG's, it provides you with 'use aqua look', so you can get rid of the brush metal look, and, wo and behold, it starts looking like a real application! It could be a lot worse, but I reckon it looks better as Aqua than Brushed Metal.
(Actually, isn't brushed metal supposed to have 'borders'? Doesn't that mean Safari uses brushed metal being anti-HIG wise in two regards? A: using brushed metal at all, B: having no border down the left/right hand sides (ie. the browser takes up 100% horizontal width of the window). Hmmm.
Actually I can cope with Safari being brushed metal than other things (such as LifTP).
